What is Qigong? (And Why Your Body Loves It)

If you’ve ever seen someone moving slowly with focused breathing, you were probably watching Qigong (pronounced “chee-gung”).

It’s a gentle practice that combines three simple things:

  • Body: Slow, relaxed movements

  • Breath: Deep, natural breathing

  • Mind: Calm, focused awareness

Think of it as a moving meditation.

How Does It Work?

In traditional Chinese thinking, “Qi” (chee) means life energy. It flows through your body like water in a river. When the flow is smooth, you feel healthy and balanced. When it gets stuck—from stress, sitting too much, or poor sleep—you might feel tired, stiff, or unwell.

Qigong helps get the energy moving again. No special equipment. No fancy gear. Just you, your breath, and gentle movement.

What Are the Benefits?

Many people practice Qigong for:

  • Less stress: Slow movements calm the nervous system

  • Better balance and flexibility: Gentle stretching keeps joints happy

  • More energy: Instead of tiring you out, it often leaves you feeling refreshed

  • Improved focus: Following the breath and movement gives your brain a break from overthinking

  • Gentle on the body: Anyone can try it—young, older, active, or recovering from illness

A Simple Practice to Try (Don't Forget to "Relaxing")

Here’s a 3-minute exercise. It’s called “Raising the Qi.”

  1. Stand comfortably with feet shoulder-width apart. Knees soft. Relax your shoulders.

  2. Let your arms hang naturally by your sides.

  3. Breathe in slowly as you lift your arms in front of you, palms facing down, until your hands reach shoulder height.

  4. Breathe out as you lower your arms back down, palms now facing up.

  5. Repeat 6–10 times.

That’s it. Just move slowly, breathe naturally, and keep your attention on the sensation of your arms floating up and down.

A Few Friendly Reminders

  • There’s no “perfect” way—it’s about how you feel, not how it looks

  • Breathe comfortably; don’t force it

  • If something feels uncomfortable, go smaller or rest

Bottom Line

Qigong isn’t complicated. It’s just a gentle way to slow down, breathe, and let your body reset.
